What the certificate is

A safety standards certificate shows that your vehicle meets the minimum safety standards.1

The safety inspection

To get a certificate, your vehicle must first pass an inspection.1 We inspect it and tell you plainly how it did.

The certificate

When the vehicle passes, we issue the Safety Standards Certificate.

If it needs work to pass

We show you what has to be fixed and give you a clear estimate before any work starts. You decide.

Valid for 36 days

A safety standards certificate is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection.1

When you need one

In Ontario you need a safety standard inspection and certificate if you are:1

  • Transferring a used vehicle to a new owner, unless the new owner is your spouse.
  • Registering a vehicle in Ontario that was bought in or came from another province, territory or country.
  • Registering a rebuilt vehicle.
  • Changing the status of a vehicle from unfit to fit.
Buying a used car?

You can buy and register a vehicle without a safety standards certificate, but you cannot put plates on it without one.1

When you do not need one

  • Transferring the vehicle to your spouse.1
  • Registering a used snow vehicle, off-road vehicle, moped or trailer.1

Cost

The cost of a safety standard inspection and the certificate is different at each inspection station, and it is not regulated by the government.1
